IBM PS/2 MODEL 56 SLC (059), MODEL 57 SLC (059) AND MODEL M57 SLC
(259) UPGRADES TO 8MB OF STANDARD MEMORY
IBM is enhancing the standard system memory to 8MB on PS/2 (R)
Model 56 SLC (TM) (8556-059), Model 57 SLC (8557-059) and
Model M57 SLC (8557-259) systems, effective July 21 1992. With these
changes, all enhanced systems have double the standard system memory
to better address customer application requirements.
The PS/2 Model 56 SLC, Model 57 SLC and Model M57 SLC systems
include Operating System/2 (R) (OS/2 (R)) Version 2.0 (preinstalled
in the 059 models, and included with the 259 model). A 160MB fixed
disk and OS/2 2.0 combine for a functionally adaptive,
high-performance desktop system with a hardware platform conducive to
solutions for a broad range of customer requirements.
These selected PS/2 Model 56 SLC, Model 57 SLC and
Model M57 SLC systems are shipped with two 4MB, 70ns single in-line
memory modules (SIMMs) and allow up to 16MB 70ns memory on the
planar. The memory controller automatically supports enhanced
performance via memory interleaving with the appropriate memory
configurations.
Planned Availability Date: July 21, 1992.

OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
o Concurrent execution of more applications with additional 4MB of
memory in the PS/2 Model 56 SLC (059), Model 57 SLC (059) and
Model M57 SLC (259) systems
o No additional cost to customer
DESCRIPTION
USER PRODUCTIVITY
The increased standard memory to 8MB on the selected PS/2
Model 56 SLC, Model 57 SLC and Model M57 SLC systems provides the
capability to support more applications concurrently, at no
additional cost to the customer. The additional memory better
enables the standard configurations to support the demands of
advanced operating systems and applications.
The enhanced PS/2 models (8556-059, 8557-059 and 8557-259)
have 8MB standard memory, with parity, using two 4MB 70ns SIMMs. The
system board has one unused memory socket to allow the system board
to be populated to a maximum of 16MB.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
These selected PS/2 Model 56 SLC, Model 57 SLC and Model M57 SLC
systems can be upgraded using the previously announced PS/2 486SLC2
Processor Upgrade (#2310, 32G3606) option when it becomes available.
TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
Technical information remains unchanged from previous
announcements of the PS/2 Model 56 SLC (059), PS/2 Model 57 SLC and
PS/2 Model M57 SLC (259).
LIMITATIONS: The PS/2 Model 56 SLC (059), Model 57 SLC (059) and
Model M57 SLC (259) systems support only 2MB, 4MB and 8MB 70ns SIMMs.
To take advantage of enhanced performance via interleaved memory,
SIMMs should be installed using all 2MB or all 4MB SIMMs. One, two
or three 2MB SIMMs provide memory interleaving. Two or three 4MB
SIMMs also provide memory interleaving. The 8MB SIMMs do not provide
interleaving.
With 24-bit addressing, the maximum addressable memory space
is 16MB. The system reserves 128KB of memory when BIOS/POST is
copied to random access memory (RAM) for execution in systems with
less than 16MB of planar memory. The system reserves 1.375MB of
memory in systems with 16MB of planar memory.
The licensed System Programs include BIOS, set configuration
and features, copy an option diskette, test, backup/restore and
update system program. These licensed System Programs are stored in
3MB of protected partition on the fixed disk drive. The formatted
capacity is therefore reduced by 3MB, and the total user-accessible
capacity may vary slightly based on operating environments. This
partition is not affected when the drive is formatted using the
FORMAT command provided in DOS or OS/2.
ORDERING TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The terms and conditions for the 8556 and 8557 system units
are unaffected by this announcement.
